Electric Double Layer Capacitors (EDLC), also referred to as “Supercapacitors”, are  next generation energy storage devices with excellent cycle characteristics. Through having the highest energy density among all capacitors, they close the gap between batteries and common capacitors. In order to reach higher voltages, single cells can be connected in series or parallel, resulting in supercapacitor modules. Despite the technology being around for some time, new application fields arise on a daily basis, enabling EDLCs a promising future.

Conductive Polymer Hybrid Aluminium Electrolytic Capacitors

Through using a combination of conductive polymer electric materials and  liquid electrolytes as electrolyte, conductive polymer hybrid aluminium electrolytic capacitors merge the best of both worlds. The polymer enables low ESR as well as high ripple current characteristics, whereas the liquid electrolytes enable low leakage current and short circuit prevention. In addition, the capacitors can withstand high voltages and provide higher capacitance ratings.

Conductive Polymer Aluminium Electrolytic Capacitors

Conductive polymer aluminium electrolytic capacitors use a highly electric conductive polymere as its electrolyte. The material composition enables the capacitors to have lower internal resistance ESR and being able to withstand higher currents. Due to the high polymer percentage, the electrolyte contains hardly any liquid and has therefore a low risk of drying out. As the polymer adapts in high temperatures, the capacitors’ life is not affected by temperature, which results in longer a lifetime. Due to being suitable for high frequency applications, the capacitors are ideal for digital circuits.

Surface mount aluminium electrolytic capacitors (SMD / SMT types) are designed for surface mounting on printed circuit boards (PCB). They are mounted through the high temperature reflow soldering method. The purpose of the SMD / SMT technology is to enable fast and automatic mounting in high density PCB designs. Ultimately, this will also result in significant system cost savings.

These capacitors are available in terminal and small sizes. While having lower capacitance than regular block types, the capacitors yield excellent impedance characteristics. There are various series available, made according to the requirements of each specific application.

The large aluminium electrolytic capacitor series of Samwha are available as snap-in, screw, and special types for specific applications. The snap-in types are easily mounted on the PCB and offer great advantages regarding voltage size and capacity of the product. The screw type capacitors are frequently used for large capacity or industrial applications.
